Almost forty years after the commencement of the Credit Union movement in Australia a small band of people recognised that steps should be taken to develop a collection of the records of the credit union movement and to carry out a number of other activities that would preserve its history. To achieve this The Australian Credit Union Historical Co-Operative Limited was established on 23 March 1985.
The Australian Credit Union Archives Trust was established in 1996. The Trustees were responsible for the control and management, collection, storage and access to the archives. The Trustees employed an archivist to carry out the various collections management tasks.
In 2004 the Australian Credit Union Historical Co-Operative Ltd was dissolved and its assets and responsibilities were transferred to the Australian Credit Union Archives Trust. Continuing our professional development of the credit union movement we explored ways to further expand the facility to cater for other mutual financial institutions.
In 2017 the Australian Credit Union Archives changed its name to Australian Mutuals History. This was to better reflect our broader collecting remit of the entire financial mutuals sector.
